Yoga for Children

Why is Yoga helpful for children?

According to many experts, children today suffer from stress now more than ever. Homework and pressure to achieve, self-esteem issues, the need to fit in, over-scheduled activities, competitive sports and busy parents are a few of the issues children try to manage…

Age of media and technology

Children today live in an age of media and technology, hearing and seeing war and violence.  They watch TV, play video games, and don’t run and play outdoors connecting with friends, exploring the world and getting exercise.  The developing bodies and minds of many children become overwhelmed, causing stress, which can lead to various health issues.  They suffer disconnection with their own minds and bodies, and with their environment.

Yoga, in Sanskrit, means to unite, (to yoke).  Yoga unites the body, mind and spirit.  Children’s yoga is playful and creative, interweaving asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing), and relaxation, encouraging imagination and connection.  Continued practice provides children with the tools to manage their emotions, to focus and concentrate, and to calm and center themselves, to become more connected in body, mind and spirit.

“As you peer inside that doorway (of a children’s yoga class), you might be wondering to yourself, “What are the children really learning?” The depth of the response may well surprise you.

What do kids really learn in a yoga class?

When children share yoga:

  • They learn how to feel inside their bodies, what parts tighten and what parts release;
  • They learn how to use their bodies to self-calm and regulate their emotions, and how to use their breath to complement this process;
  • They learn how to stay healthy as their muscles lengthen and tone, their bones grow strong and they develop their sense of balance and co-ordination;
  • They learn important social skills, how to interact with others in a way that is positive and affirming;
  • They learn how to listen, both to instructions and to each other, before taking action;
  • They learn to motor plan and problem-solve as they think about how they are going to move their bodies into the next physical posture;
  • They learn to take risks and have a go, knowing that it is safe to do so;
  • They learn to believe in themselves and to know that they are worthwhile;
  • Finally, they learn that they are just one piece in a massive puzzle of human connection, and that when they unite together with another human being they feel a sense of solidarity and begin to feel compassion.

“Ultimately, when children share yoga, they learn about life”.

Yoga Therapy

Meets children where they are

Research has shown that the brain has the capacity to change and learn.  Yoga and mindfulness can re-wire the brain.

“Children yearn for a sip of calm.”  (Louise Goldberg)

Yoga therapy can help to re-organize the body and balance the energetic systems of the brain of children of all abilities.  Yoga therapy can address attention, speech and language, self-regulation, learning and high and low muscle tone.

Yoga Therapy

Highly Individualized Sessions

Children’s yoga can be considered therapeutic as it:

  • increases a child’s strength and flexibility
  • improves balance
  • improves concentration
  • improves general body awareness
  • increases self-confidence
  • helps create a child’s connection within himself and with his environment.

Yoga therapy uses the tools of children’s yoga, but each session is highly individualized toward a child or a group of children, and goals are brought to each session.

Yoga therapy teaches children of different abilities how to control their bodies, how to breathe, and how to relax. It provides them with tools for success and to develop opportunities for independence. A few of the different abilities that yoga therapy has been known to benefit:  physical disabilities, Down Syndrome, Emotional Behavior Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Yoga therapy “. . .  helps students change their relationship to and identification with their condition.”  (Louise Goldberg)

Training of a Yoga Therapist

A yoga therapist must have extensive training in the anatomy and physiology of various disabilities and how to assist differently abled children with postures, breathing techniques and relaxation that will engage their energy safely and comfortably toward a desired goal. Before beginning yoga therapy, the therapist observes each child, reviews her medical record and speaks with parents before determining an appropriate method of instruction. The process rather than the outcome measures a child’s success in yoga therapy.

Yoga therapy offers children with autism and special needs opportunities for growth development and peace.

Goals in yoga therapy may include:

  • reducing or managing symptoms that cause suffering
  • improving function
  • helping to prevent the occurrence or recurrence of underlying causes of illness

The benefits of yoga therapy for children:

  • Stress relief and relaxation
  • Energizing
  • Mindfulness
  • Connection with others in a natural setting
  • Social interaction thru play
  • Speech and language development
  • Self-esteem
  • Connection with the therapist
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Balance
  • Sensory processing
  • Proprioception
  • Vestibular sense
  • Sensory awareness through touch pressure
  • Gravitational security

“Yoga is about connections:  connecting breath with movement, body with mind and even mind with spirit.  These connections created are why yoga is such a powerful tool to reach children with different abilities.”   (Louise Goldberg)

Lyn's Yoga Journey

Lyn Jekowsky
Children's Yoga Instructor

To watch joy emerge in a child’s eyes as she accomplishes even a small goal, fills my heart and makes my soul happy.

    I have been dedicated to the health, well being and empowerment of children since discovering pediatric nursing over thirty-five years ago. Eighteen of those years I practiced as an elementary school nurse in Needham. I discovered yoga fifteen years ago, and the inner peace, strength and spirituality it has awarded me has greatly enhanced my life.

    Mindfulness and relaxation breathing techniques were essential tools in my school nursing practice.  Thus the seed was planted to marry the two joys in my life, and teach yoga to children of all abilities.

    Lyn's Journey

    Lyn’s Yoga Journey

    I became a Certified Children’s Yoga Instructor through Childlight Yoga in February 2014, and began teaching after school yoga classes to students in preschool to grade 4. Sharing yoga with children was amazing!

    I craved more knowledge, more tools, music, and lesson ideas. I sought further training with Childlight Yoga, receiving Level 2 Instructor Certification in September, 2014.  This summer, July, 2015, I achieved certification as a Creative Relaxation Level 2 Trainer in Yoga Therapy to address the needs of children with autism and different abilities.  I also was attuned to Reiki 1 in the spring of 2012 and Reiki 2 a year later.  In November, 2015 I completed a twelve hour on line course on Mindfulness Fundamentals.

    I draw on my knowledge of pediatric growth and development, anatomy and physiology, and behavioral and mental health to challenge students within their individual ability, when planning and sharing a yoga class with children, to make each child feel safe and comfortable.

    Why Yoga?

    My intent in sharing yoga with children, is to teach them to be more mindful, resourceful and emotionally intelligent;  to provide them with tools to help them cope with life’s difficult situations, and to build resilience.

    “Smart – is finding something you love, that feeds your soul, and immersing yourself in it so you can share it with those you love.” (anonymous)

    In each children’s yoga class I link breath, physical exercise and relaxation to help:

    • build resilience
    • promote self esteem
    • a healthy body
    • a calm and confident mind

    The classes for preschoolers thru preteen are filled with developmentally appropriate animated asanas (poses), pranayamas (breathing techniques), music and songs, games and creative movement, literacy (stories and books), arts and crafts, and relaxation.

    Research

    Research has shown that by practicing yoga children can:

    • improve posture
    • self confidence
    • strength
    • flexibility
    • balance
    • social skills
    • problem solving
    • relaxation (how to use their bodies and breathing techniques to self-calm and regulate their emotions)

    This is so important for children today, in this media driven, busy world.  I hope to plant the seeds of practicing and enjoying yoga in the hearts of the children I teach.

    Joy of Yoga

    I continue to grow, in my heart and mind, as I practice yoga and meditation.  My husband recently discovered yoga, and practicing together is fun, sometimes humorous, and bonding.  My other passions include my family (3 children and 2 grandchildren), my yellow lab Willow, gardening, crafting and reading.

    My feelings after every yoga class I share with children are captured in this poignant quote:

    “To be able to tap into a child’s joy is wondrous.  When you are a part of that joy, it is beyond description.  Meet each class, each child, each pose with gratitude and your life will be truly blessed.”  (Anonymous)
